WOW, Thank you for this.my old hood!
thanks for checking out the site.
I have no verification of what I am about to say. I grew up in Oak Park (my family made the socioeconomic jump from Taylor St to Taylor Ave in 1947) When the Congress Expressway was being constructed (I was about 12 years old) I remember asking one of the Village Board members why the Austin and Harlem Exits were in the center rather to the right. The gentleman smiled and said “we decided it was better for traffic flow and besides it looks better.” After he left I asked my dad what he meant. His response was Oak Park has so much drag (30’s term for influence) that they just decided it looked better.”
it sounds credible. i hear that they are thinking about moving the ramps to the normal sides if it is not cost prohibitive. thanks for checking out the site.
The “Congress” expressway plan was originally designed by Daniel Burnham, long before cars were common. A man of great insight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Burnham
I spent countless hours traveling on that interstate.
thanks for your added information.
You’re welcome.
